Today, I’m teaching French in a university in India. One of the students asked me if Paris was the only city in France. FML

Hit that student over the head with a map or globe. Maybe some kind of osmosis will happen and some knowledge will seep in.

"No such thing as a dumb question" yeah I don't believe that

In fact, it's someway true if you consider how many museums, coffees, shops, restaurants and jobs there is in Paris. So, i'm not surprised if it's the only french city in people's mind and it won't change since politics asked architects to imagine a "Grand Paris", a bigger city. It concentrates so many cultural, economical and political buildings that you can say it's the center of France, even if it annoys me a lot. I would take the opportunity to show them the various landscape in France like le Mont Saint Michel, Bordeaux, whatever come in your mind and around the world. They may think and wrote about what a city mean for them, what is important in a city for them, wouldn't it make an interresting essay ? :)

I wouldn't be to upset by that, unless he was trying to be funny and hint at something.

At least she wants to learn, I know a lot of people who wouldn't ask if they didn't know.

Parisians certainly seem to think so...

@Lostprhophet I will concede the Vatican, which is a State-City. However Monaco, Andorra are principalities, which are considered as territories. Luxembourg has several towns, including the capital Luxembourg City. Anyway, as I was saying, France is not exactly unknown, how can someone even think there is only on city in a 64 million people country?

Sure they were not asking capital of france! maybe it got lost in translation!

@OP Are you in Loyola College by any vague chance? We actually used to have French teachers who came from France.
