Happened to one of my friend, he changed his relationship status on fb after dating this girl a couple of months to "in a relationship" and she was like "oh you have a girlfriend..." And he said "yeah, you". They've been together since, so it can work for some people. Hopefully it gave you the opportunity to talk about your relationship :)

Communication is key. Or you will never know where things stand. Just because you see someone for any length of time does not automatically mean you are in a relationship and the other person is you boy/girlfriend.
