I have deteriating disk disease myself I used to be 6ft tall and and now I'm 5ft 8 in the pain is extruciating. A good Orthopedic Dr is one you want to have so I recommend a second as I have done because the first dr told me it was just sciatica
I had a doctor like that once. You have my sympathies.
The simplest solution is to make an appointment with an orthopedic doctor to have your spine looked at. Do not go get a referral from your primary care physician because you'll have to pay for two doctor's visits instead of one and your doctor might refuse to give you the referral.
An xray may not show disc disease. The simple answer is that you need an MRI.
Depending on how far gone the disc is, an x-ray can show it but yes, an MRI is much more detailed and will also show other things as well, such as bulging, ruptures, tears, etc. A good MRI and a good doctor who can properly read them is a must.

Don't know why you're ignoring option three: your doctor is being paid off by a coalition of spine gnomes who are mining for spine gold. The longer you remain ignorant, the more they get.
Perhaps find a second opinion
