Do you often send him selfies? If you do he maybe just answers what you wanted to hear without looking closer. Or he thought you tried some new make up to change your look and he also just said what he thought you want to hear.

I know if I'm doing something in another app i'll still reply "cute" even though I didn't fully look at the picture. He was probably just busy and didn't want to look right then
