OP, now filing that successful police complaint will be very easy to do! Illegal actions should ALL-ways have consequences + it's money out of YOUR pocket. THEY decided to ruin your mutual friendship, not you. You have nothing to be guilty about; it's your job! But don't shame them in public. It makes you look petty; you've got more class than that. -)
When waiting tables, dine &a dash, I had to pay for it. These folks are not your friends.
Makes the police's job that much easier as you know where the thief lives..
I'd personally report them to your management and to police. I know that sounds like a dick move, but them dining, dashing, and putting you in a difficult situation deserves a strong response that'll make them think twice about being jerks.
I second the people calling for naming the little shit. esp if your work is like all mine were and made you pay for the tab. I'd give the manager your "friends" name and address and any other contact info you have and tell him to do what he will (Which will prob be file a police report). don't think it's uncool because you know them - if they gave a single shit about you as a friend, or person, they wouldn't have screwed you over like that.
hmmm not a friend...if it was a joke they would come back or text you and pay you...call the cops, in the usa you go jail for everything.....and if they want to guilt trip you just say your boss knew it was your friends so it was either call the cops or loose the job. simple

Do not underestimate the power of a public shaming. Bring it up in front of mutual friends/acquaintances whenever the opportunity arises. Next time you visit his home, ask his parents if their finances are in good order, and tell them that you'd like to lend a hand if you can. Tell the story to their puzzled faces. You'll get the money -- and a decent tip as well.
No friend of yours. Now you have to pay their check (I assume, since you were waiting on them) or possibly get fired.
