my friend's mom had a heart attack, and we all knew before she did. her family just didn't want to tell her yet.

That's sad but OP definitely not your fault. You were trying to be a supportive friend. I'm sure that when your friend heals a little bit emotionally, they will see that your heart was in the right place.
