Today, I told my professor that I'll be missing class next week due to upcoming surgery. I asked if I could take the exam that I'd otherwise miss another day. He said no, and that I'd just have to take a failing grade, then wished me luck with the surgery. FML

I would talk to the school president and tell him what is happening. Also bing in a note from the dr.

Please, for the love of all that is good, Google it, and don't Bing it, OP.

#10 where the heck are you going to school at? Professors are people who have sold any and all emotion to satan for an increased teacher salary

Or they're people who want to do research and make theories and discoveries that could impact the future. Some aren't great at teaching, but most have to. Some just aren't great at teaching.

first of all good luck for the surgery but how should he know you're not just saying it to get more time to learn? i guess that will happen more often than actual surgeries... depending on the type of surgery maybe reschedule this?

Thing is, OP asked to take the test EARLY. That does not require more time to study. Seems like a show of good faith to me. And a professor who just has no empathetic or sympathetic qualities, only pathetic ones.

Sometimes it takes months to get an appointment, I doubt op wants to wait any longer for the surgery.

it was never meant as an insult by any means and i'm not from the us so i don't know about the hospitals and policies there either. only thing i read was another day - neither earlier nor later. so if with that words a student would have asked me i would have assumed they meant later. my mistake due to language problems i guess.

46- No. The FML wasn't clear. OP just said he wanted to reschedule the exam but didn't specify when. 19 made a perfectly reasonable assumption thinking OP might have rescheduled the exam for later.

Umm no the fml was clear that the op wanted to take the exam early, while #19 said that how didn't the proffesor think op was trying to get more time to study

No it wasn't. it said "another day", which can mean later.

I can see the confusion now that I read it the way you guys did. I read it as if OP would miss it another day and asked to take it early. But I do see where people get a later test date. Punctuation should be properly used in this FML

I realize most professors don't care, but really? Talk to his superiors and Ace that test. Good luck with your surgery!

I don't think he can do that legally. Take a note from your doctor to the head of the department, or you can email the teacher and carbon his boss.

I believe there are rules in place for most public school systems (grade school and university) that require accommodations for medical procedures.
