Look on the brightside. You give great advice and you got tipped for it whether it was low or not.
Haha piss off, 'can't afford to eat today' being a waiter is one of the easiest jobs on the planet, why should we pay an extra fifty dollars because they carried food two or three metres?
Un, have you ever been a server? Really doubt it considering your blabbing. And you aren't expected to pay what you do forgot he meal, learn to do percentages and you'll have a much easier life.
To those that are saying "If you can't afford to tip then you shouldn't be eating out in the first place" or some variation of I have two things for you. #1 Those people very well could have been on their last 52 dollars and after struggling or in a depression figured that maybe just for an hour or two they would like to have a happy moment so it's memory could carry them through for the next 4 years of hell. It happens and that money wouldn't be enough to solve their problems but it was enough for that. #2 It works both ways. If you can't afford to work there then get a different job or do something to change your situtation
1. If you live in a country where servers are severely underpaid and you can't afford to tip with your meal, you can't afford to eat out. Happy moments or not. Order something less expensive if you know it'll be tight. They of all people should understand the importance of tipping if times are tough for them. 2. If all servers found different jobs, who would bring you your food?
If all servers found different jobs, then good, because that would open up hundreds of jobs for homeless people who would not even care about any tips.
#33 Your response tells me that you've never been to a point in your life where you needed a happy moment. Don't know if you know this either but wherever you work on tips...if they don't make up to minimum wage the place of employment has to cover that difference. If all th e current servers got different jobs then I'll assume the cooks will start just serving or the business owner would do it. Then again as 40 said there will always be people that need a job.
#33 your comment is 100% pure emotion. Why is it customer's responsibility to pay the wages of the servers? That's what the employers are for. If you cannot afford to work there, then get a new job. The only ones who say "I can't find a job" are the ones who aren't looking.
It's not even that hard to serve yourself. Sure they serve many people at a time, but how about we get rid of the job and everyone just gets up and gets the food themselves.
You can do a lot of other things for $52 than eat at a restaurant. "I'm poor and need a happy moment" is a downright stupid excuse to go out to eat and not tip. Go to a movie. Go to a park. Go to an arcade. Make a sandwich and have a picnic. Do literally anything other than screw someone out of money they've earned and need because of the way their wages work. And yes, I've been desperately poor and deeply depressed at the same time, so I know what it's like. Being poor and depressed doesn't give you license to be an inconsiderate dick.
If I buy food, why would I pay more for the food than what it costs? Get ******. It's not inconsiderate at all, blame the employers.
ALL the time
Yet another predominantly American problem. I worked as a waitress throughout school and university (so fair enough I didn't 100% rely on that income) and I think tipping is bullshit. You should be be paid minimum wage and if the States don't have this as law then than it's absolutely ridiculous. I would much rather the prices go higher, but then I can guilt-free pick a meal I know I can afford and tip when the service is really extraordinary and not because I have to. I hardly ever leave over 1€-1,5€ regardless of my bill, and thankfully, it is completely acceptable here. I would probably make an exception and tip more if it was truly a very fancy restaurant (though, they are probably paid more there, so this actually makes little sense). Also - in no other job do you get 'tipped' for going above and beyond. So, why should waitresses be tipped for not only going above and beyond, but literally just doing their job? If you bring me my food in an empty restaurant, you're doing your job; if you bring me everything on time with a smile while it's packed and hectic, you're still just doing your job, but as a decent human being, I understand that it's a more difficult shift, therefore I tip. If I make no extra demands and you don't go the extra mile (and I'm struggling to come up with what that could be), then I'll tip whatever change I have if any, and not over a 1€. Your employer should pay you, not me
#44 The employer is required to make up the difference if the tipped wages don't make at least minimum wage. Many people that bitch about servers not getting tips and depending on that to survive aren't aware of that. I'm with you. I'll tip when the service is above and beyond. Won't tip if you're just doing your job
Minimum wage is still not much. And employers don't like making up the difference. If they have to do it too often, the server gets fired. So that's something to think about.
You know what #83) I'm a student, who is under thousands of dollars of debt and I'm constantly under stress. I'm SORRY that that the waiter's boss is an ass, and that they need to pay rent. But don't take the boss's stress out on us. Have you ever thought that maybe the people who visit restaurants are struggling too in life? Don't tell me that if I can spend $50 outside that I have extra money to spare because I don't. I also want to live and have fun in this world despite my stressful situation so I WILL go out to restaurants once in a while to get a breather. So don't tell me I can't "afford" to go out and I should "stay home". Screw all of you saying that bullshit. Inconsiderate as ****. That's something to think about.
I've been poor and stressed out too. That's not an excuse to not pay people for work they do. Grow the **** up and deal with your problems in a way that doesn't make a problem for somebody else. "I have student debt and am stressed out." You and everybody else in America. Boo ******* hoo.
#97) How about you grow the **** up? Yes I am a student and I am ******* stressed. Those waitress's have managers who don't pay the difference? Well boo boo to them and they should "grow the **** up" and complain to the police since the manager is clearly breaking the law. You're ******* inconsiderate as ****. I'll do whatever the **** I want if I need a breather. You ain't no one to tell me where to spend my money and not. I don't give a **** that you were poor at a point too. You're not me. And what the actual ****? You're bitching at me for not paying an adequate amount of tip. 1) do you know the definition of a fuckinh tip? 2) why the **** won't you tell the waitress's to go complain higher up? Is it my fault that they lack the skill of communicate with higher up? Why the **** should I be their punching bag? You need to **** off. And YOU need to grow up. The real issue is the managers are assholes who don't pay the difference. Not the fault of the waitress or the ******* people. **** off and learn to see things both ways. OH OH really? I should figure out a way to not make my problems other people's problems??? Isn't the waitress doing the same ******* THING because they can't communicate with higher up or don't have the guts to complain?? You're an ignorant ****. And DO NOT tell others what to do. I'll do whatever the **** I want to enjoy my life. ******* bs
Looks like that education of yours isn't doing much for you, because your reading comprehension is severely lacking. I didn't say anything about employers not paying the difference for servers when they can't make minimum wage in tips. Obviously that's a legal issue that needs to be reported. But, like I said, employers don't like making up that difference, and servers can be fired if it happens too often, and when it does it shouldn't be because you decided your "stress relief" was more important than their livelihood. And who asked you to go to school and go into debt? That was a choice you made. I can't dictate to you how to deal with the problems you created for yourself, but if you ask me, it takes a pretty narcissistic and selfish person to decide that your problems are more important than another person's livelihood. I hope when you decide that your night of fun outweighs someone else's need to earn a living, you at least have the decency to tell them beforehand that you don't plan on tipping them. Letting them work their ass off for you thinking they're going to earn a good tip is a pretty dishonest and shitty thing to do.
So who are you again? Some butthurt idiot on the Internet who only sees things ONE way? 1) So it's my fault to get educated and hence getting myself into debt? LMFAO? Are you serious? That's hilarious. Okay let's play your game. I can use the same argument on your little restaurant scenario. *Ahem* It's THEIR fault for choosing that job and hence not being able to pay their debts. Boom. (Honestly that was the most stupidest comment I've read all day) 2) So you found nothing constructive to say and had to comment on my grammar? Good job, I'm sure you must feel very good about yourself. 3) I never said I don't tip. I said I don't always have enough to tip as much as it's expected. If someone gave me good service, I always tip. Even if it's a little. So don't ******* assume. 4) You're calling me selfish, saying that my own problem is more "important to me" than others. First of all, I never said that. So way to stuff your damn words down my mouth. Second, that stupid statement can again be used on your little restaurant scenario too. In my defence, the employees are selfish as **** for complaining over getting a $2 tip and wanting more because they "can't pay rent" when they don't have the guts to approach higher up and complain that their manager won't pay the difference. "No one asked for them to work in this job, they came in knowing you are paid shitty and that you need a good manager to pay the difference, so it's their fault for putting themselves in a shitty situation. This isn't rocket science. Everyone knows what it means to be a waitress in the USA". I felt bad writing that last sentence because that was your logic used on your own scenario. Go ahead, belittle me more. I will just throw it back at you using your restaurant scenario. I CANT BELIEVE you could be so ******* ignorant and one sided. Did someone hurt you? You need to seriously start seeing things both ways. Your argument as a whole is flawed as ****. You're completely one sided and you seriously need to re-evaluate your thinking. And for the others out there who are reading this message. I don't actually think restaurant workers are selfish people who are "gutless". I'm just trying to use this person's ignorant words against them to show them how ridiculous they sound. My main point is, the system sucks. Government needs to make it so it's minimum wage for these poor employees who take the hits from both sides and managers need to be reported and booted out. Everyone has their own lived experience and struggled, being one sided won't solve shit. The system is flawed, so please stop blaming the employees and the people.
Actually, I didn't criticize your grammar. That's fine. It's your reading comprehension I criticized, and that you've one again proven is lacking. People need to work for a living. People take the job they can get, not the job they want. It's a lot easier to not go to school and take out students loans than it is to not work a job you dislike. The fact that you apparently don't understand that says a lot about you. You're so opposed to this system of tipping, but you insist on upholding the industries that use it, not at the expense of the employers that impose it, but at the expense of the workers who rely on it for their living, all while benefiting from the quality service and low food prices it provides. That is extremely hypocritical. No, you didn't say your problems were more important than another person's livelihood, but the attitude you've communicated here displays it. And now you just look like a little girl throwing a tantrum with your rant.
First of all, I am not "so opposed to tipping". I really don't understand why you enjoy putting words in my mouth. Go read my last comment, looks like you need to take your own advice on "reading comprehension" before pointing fingers at others. 1) The food is not cheap, okay? Let's get that straight. 2) I tip, but I can't always tip a high amount as I have my own rent and debts to pay. Thanks for being inconsiderate as **** for that. 3) I probably care about others more than you considering I'm supporting both the employees of the restaurant and the general public who may be suffering due to financial reasons as well. Not like you, who is one sided. Supporting the employees and ******** on the public. You're biased, ignorant and one sided as hell. You really think I don't feel bad for those people who apparently only make $2.55 or whatever? Jeez. Come on. That's sad and terrible. But you know what, the general public shouldn't take the damn heat because: 1) The government decided to not make their wages minimum. 2) The managers who don't pay the difference are assholes. Your argument is flawed. And by supporting one side so religiously, you've truly shown who's throwing the tantrum. Also, you do realize that people try and get educated so they don't have to work shitty jobs for life right? A degree will get you better jobs versus no degree in general. So don't say that because I chose to go to school, my debts are suddenly incomparable to those who are working at a restaurant. I don't WANT to be stuck in a shitty position all my life so I'm trying to do something about it. (Not saying that those stuck in shitty jobs deserve it or put themselves there, everyone has their own story). But YOU CANNOT undermine my "choices". You're so goddamn judgemental. Wow. Just wow.
Tipping is a tricky business. I always check the wages before I go to the restaurant and where I live, the waitress, for example, only makes a dollar less than minimum wage. Not only that, but the Subway around the corner and some other fast food restaurants in my downtown mall ask for tips now. It's just a bit weird at this point. In the US, it definitely seems like it's different because the waitress is paid MUCH lower so can't argue about tips there. The only thing I'd say is telling someone "to not eat out" just because they can't tip is ridiculous. First you buy food, then you pay the taxes on it, and then you're expected to tip on that. Some people want to go out and have a good time with others once in awhile, and only make enough to spend a certain amount. What's the real solution? Well.. I think the USA government needs to change the wages for people working in restaurants because honestly they deserve it. I can see from their point of view how stressful it must be to depend on tips + having a manager who doesn't pay the difference. But yelling at the public isn't a good solution. They have their own rights. Not to mention, not everyone is INFORMED about how much someone makes. In some countries, tips ARE "bonuses" and in other, they're looked at VERY negatively. So people have their own moral backgrounds. Regardless.. It shouldn't be obligatory. I understand that waitress's life depends on it but then you're ignoring the person's life who IS coming to the restaurant. This ridiculous rule in the US is putting the two groups against each other just because they choose not to pay everyone minimum wage. It's THEIR fault, don't call people cheap and don't call waitress's selfish. Neither is wrong in their position. This is just an issue that the government needs to solve. Like how where I live, they make only $1 less than minimum wage so if they get small tips - it works for them. Not to mention, everyone is happy and can actually enjoy their respective experiences.
Edit: by "It's THEIR fault", I'm referring to the US government's fault.
The employer is required to make up the difference if the tips don't make their salary at least minimum wage. If they aren't doing that they are breaking the law and the server is choosing to go along with it by continuing to work there. At that point they shouldn't get to complain about the public not tipping because they chose to work for a crappy boss
#54) You're right, the employer should be paying the difference. That's required by law. That's why I'm trying to say that the public shouldn't be told to "not eat out" or considered "cheap" or "yelled at" for not tipping. Most of the people commenting here are saying "you shouldn't go out if you can't afford to tip". I just find that comment so ridiculous. The point I was making was that 1) The government is at fault for not making it minimum wage. 2) Employer is at fault for not following the law of paying difference 3) You're partially at fault as a waitress/bartender for staying there despite the employer failing to pay you. (Partially because I know finding a job can be tough these days) And 4) The public is NOT at fault because tipping has always been a choice and so making it obligatory just because option 1 and 2 aren't great is NOT right. Restaurants are for the public, to go out and have a good time.
My bad. I was on your side. Guess it just didn't read that well
While I agree saying "don't go out if you can't afford tip" is a little unrealistic, I also think there are things to do when strapped for cash. If I'm really low on cash, I certainly don't go out to 50$ restauraunts. Instead I might hang with a friend at a no-tip place (ie: McDonald) or I'll take cash from something I usually buy (ie: coffee) and put it towards the tip. Like it or not, tipping in America has become a culturally expected thing. I agree that's kind of messed up, and I'd prefer they just charge more for the food and pay the waitresses minimum wage (like they do in other countries), but if you really want to fight the system it makes more sense to boycot the restauraunt and send them a letter explaining why. There do exist restauraunts where tip is not expected, or is included automatically in the bill, or where you know for sure the waiters are paid minimum wage. If you don't like the tipping culture, finding one of these restauraunts to support makes more sense than just not tipping a good waitress. Doing that only punishes the waitress. It's easy to say "go higher up" but a lot of waitresses have no other job opportunities. And it's also important to remember these are at-will states. Maybe the emplyer DOES pay the difference, but if it happens too often (even if it's not her fault) he will just assume it is and fire her. So tldr: I agree tipping culture is messed up, but I don't think changing it is as simple as not tipping or saying "just get another job." There are other options to fix the system.
Sometimes it's just a matter of having a hard time affording it. I'm a college student, and it's happened in one place that the food was more expensive than I thought. I told the waitress that she was really great but I just couldn't afford a big tip, and she actually told me not to tip her cuz of that. At least you know they liked you though. With how 'standard' tipping is, the praise actually means a lot and tipping doesnt always equate to how good the service was.
You can tell people that employers are required to make up the difference for minimum wage until your'e blue in the face. And of course I run into this response all the time "Not all employers do that though" or "They make you report that your tips are higher" Ummm no you make that choice to work for someone breaking the law. Which is exactly what they are doing.
Sometimes you only have so much on you, othertimes you can't afford to tip
*Insert Mr. Krabs playing a sad song on the worlds smallest violin here*
You should be happy they gave you that. You don't know their financial situation, so stop ******* bitching.

Well at least you know the service was great and that's not the reason why you got a low tip
I wish everyone had to work at least a week in the service industry just to get educated about tipping. In before the "Why should I have to tip you..." "if you don't like it, get another job..." But then who would be there to serve you your entrees?" hmmmm?
