My husband gets crap for his French Canadian accent. They have absolutely no clue what his accent is, and half of them don't even know there IS a Quebec. One shopkeeper thought my husband was retarded, and kept talking through him to me. "Does he need a new pair of glasses? Does he need a new prescription?" I answered, "Why don't you ask him?"
