I imagine they were probably just jealous. Us americans don't really have any good accents of our own.
Wow.... I can do a fake, and fakes sound different from the real. Us Americans are ignorant as ****.
I was at a Renaissance Fair in Colorado in '06, so people were naturally trying to mimic Olde English Accents.... someone whined to my girlfriend at the time that I sounded soooo fake. I've lived in the North East of England all my life.... :-)
I live in Des Moines, IA and moved here from Coventry 9 months ago. People always think i am faking my accent!
You'll get used to the stupid.
I went to college with a bunch of British guys. Overheard in the dorms, they spoke more or less "normally" (for the region) with a modest accent. In public, around girls especially, they all suddenly turned into early 1900s English chimneysweeps.
Makes me wonder what the dumbass would think to be a genuine British accent.

Wow... If i was you I would have bitched right back at her in my "fake" accent.
You should sling some good British jargon at the bloody rube. That would make him feel like the dumbass he clearly is.
