As a pianist myself with an upright at home, I agree that family will want you to stop. My advice: just try your best to be respectful to them, I'm not saying you aren't! Also, good luck! Keep working on it and your brother will eventually be amazed!
Practice isn't supposed to sound good, it's what gets you good :) Don't stop hammering out those repetitive monotone scales, OP! Your bro will learn to love it...I'm sure
