Your parents were definitely out of line in inviting your ex, but why wouldn't you tell them you were bringing someone along to dinner? That doesn't seem like something you should spring on someone. What if there hadn't been enough food?
Maybe she did, and by surprising her parents she meant by telling them the person she brought along was her boyfriend.
Surpriseception
Why the heck would that even seem like a good idea mom and dad?
Drama!
Oh well that's very awkward. What happened next? Did your ex and boyfriend both stay for dinner? I'm looking forward to the follow-up!
Sounds like they liked your ex more then you did. Talk about awkward!
Obviously you tell your ex to leave? Or you take your bf and leave. Your bf doesn't deserve to sit through that shit.
So, here's what I don't understand. Your ex showed up, even though he's your ex. From how you describe your FML, he was also surprised. Did you forget to break up with him or something? Or is he just one of those really clingy obsessive types, who your parents happen to really like, and they're forcing him back on you?
It sounds like OP's ex was surprised that she has a new bf. After all, the ex probably would not have accepted the invite from the 'rents unless he thought he had a chance of getting back with OP.

Awkward! Why would they invite your ex, though?
Just because the OP was dating a new person doesn't mean that she hasn't broken up with her ex for a while. The parents probably knew about the breakup, liked the ex and was trying to play re-matchmaker without knowing she had already moved on?
