My dentist once filled a cavity using no novocaine. When I noticed he was drilling without numbing me, I asked him about it and he said "the shot would hurt as much as the drilling" I don't think he was right. I cried.

Dentists often use topical anaesthetic (numbing gel) to prep people for the shot. On some, it is so effective that they dont even need a shot. Not to mention some cavities are so minor you dont need anaesthetic at all. Some people dont react to anaesthetic well at all, it either takes very long to work or an outrageous amount needs to be used to numb the gums and nerve for more difficult procedures. Lastly, people have different pain tolerances and you never know who has what. You just have to be honest and raise your hand, no twitching or jumping, when it hurts and consult your dentist. They usually check for numbness before starting anyway, you could ask them to double check before he or she begins.
