The longer you wait to say something, the worse it's going to be for you.
I'm sure if you tell them what happened they will be okay with it as long as it wasn't deliberate
My advice is to own up to it, it can actually be a respectable trait in the workforce to own up when you've stuffed up. I consult for some large IT systems. Half the job can be troubleshooting what caused it, and half fixing it. If I get a call that something has gone wrong, and I spend an entire day troubleshooting what caused it, only to find out that someone knows exactly what went wrong but they are covering up something they did, I'm fuming. If they own up, so I know how to begin fixing it, I don't have a problem with that at all, everyone makes mistakes. Don't waste their time.
More like FML to the employer and servicemen who need to waste valuable time trying to fix your mess which could've been avoided if you just owned up.
So it's an essential machine, so instead of fessing up and probably not even getting in trouble (assuming it was an accident and there is no rules against earrings/jewelry), you've decided to stay silent for an entire week, costing your company production, profits, and possibly even clients? You better hope they don't find it now, or else you'll probably be having to find a new job.
F your life? F your employers life for having to deal with a lying jerk like you that is causing the company to lose a ton of time and money because of your stupid pride. Suck it up.
Next time, if you feel u cant confess to your boss, at least sweet talk to the service men, they can discreetly recover the earring and often can give a fake reason for failure pleasible enough so your work never knows. Now it is probably to late.
I saw your name and I got all giddy, cause we just watched that movie in Fine Arts class at my school. I love Vermeer's work.

You know, Van Gogh had a way of dealing with stress that I think would really help disqualify you as a suspect if the earring is ever found…
I'd say you should go to your boss and tell him that you may know why the machine is broke. Just say that you've realized that there's one of your earrings missing. He won't be too hard.
