Today, my aunt and uncle came into the restaurant I work at to give me a late Christmas gift. The gift was the $20 tip they left, which got divided amongst all the staff. FML

Well this got posted surprisingly fast To clarify: they didn't realize that the tips we receive are for everyone, not just the waitresses. I didn't bother asking then for another $20 because I figured, hey, it's the thought that counts, and I ended up getting a decent tip pay that night anyways. Thanks for the nice comments :)

If it was really supposed to be a gift, they could've waited for a more appropriate time to give it to you..and only you.

I find it weird how you let them steal your money

A lot of restaurants do tip share as policy. Texas Roadhouse does, for example. The waitstaff get paid about $2.50 an hour and the rest is shared tips. A lot of people don't realize or know places have that policy in place.

#22 $2.50 an hour? That's absurd! Isn't it illegal to pay lower than federal minimum wage? (I'm honestly asking) Where I work it's state minimum wage and the servers split between the host, busser and expo. They usually keep 70% of their tips. I think it's silly if you have to split with the cooks, we get paid more than everyone else, with the exception of management.

Not in the USA. Becuse of a * law many positions where you receive tips are exempt from thr one that covers non-tipping positions, and are stuck at $2.20 an hour.

You get the $2.50 in this case and the tips are suppose to get you to minimum wage. If you don't get to minimum wage then the company is to pay you the difference to get you to minimum wage. That's the law.

Less than $1 each, there were at least 14 waitresses on that night and it goes to the cooking staff too

That sucks, they shoulda put it in a card or something for you to open later

Happened to me before and it sucks. But it's a nice gesture anyway.

I'm sure if they knew they wouldn't have given it as a tip? I still think it's a nice gesture.

Been there :/ My uncle left me a $42 tip once. I split it with my boss and didn't even make $30.

your aunt and uncle should know that tip is not a Christmas gift... its an appreciation for your service...
