Today, my aunt and uncle came into the restaurant I work at to give me a late Christmas gift. The gift was the $20 tip they left, which got divided amongst all the staff. FML

Well this got posted surprisingly fast To clarify: they didn't realize that the tips we receive are for everyone, not just the waitresses. I didn't bother asking then for another $20 because I figured, hey, it's the thought that counts, and I ended up getting a decent tip pay that night anyways. Thanks for the nice comments :)

If it was really supposed to be a gift, they could've waited for a more appropriate time to give it to you..and only you.

Well I'm glad everything worked out ok in the end OP

How is it that a tip on a table YOU serve, gets spread amongst everyone there?!

Because the server's co-workers provide support to the server and allow him/her to deliver better service, thus (in theory) allotting him/her a better tip. For instance in the restaurant I work in the hosts, bussers, good runner and bartenders get tipped out because they all make the servers job easier in some way and allow the server to spend more time with the guest.

when I was server at every drunks favorite restaurant we didn't have to tip out the server assistant. and to be honest I didn't very often because they didn't help me for shit unless I begged them to clean up after a big table!

In some states forced tip sharing is illegal. Your business may be breaking the law. Technically a tip left in cash on the table is not a payment to the restaurant, but a payment directly to the individual. Them forcing you to split it up could be argued as theft.

It might not be forced. OP could be fine with sharing the genuine tips, and just didn't want to raise a fuss over that specific $20. It might be a lot for serving one table, but in perspective $20 is a fairly negligible part of your weekly takeaway.

You realize that is now on the internet. For anyone and everyone to see. You could probably get arrested just for that comment.

Most folks don't think about the tip getting split. I usually ask if tips are split before I tip exceptional service more than my 18% std

You don't need to get presents from every single person you know. A $20 tip is really nice, depending on the bill. Sorry you had to split it with others, but they probably didn't know that. You just sound ungrateful.

If you had read op follow up you wouldn't think she was ungrateful. She said it was the thought that counts and she wasn't upset about it at all

a lot of people don't know about to share, I wouldn't blame them too much

I guess they don't realize how a restaurant works. :( sorry OP. Hope You got other great gifts.

Tipping is an outdated bullshit system anyway. Servers and other workers should just get paid a living wage and not have to rely on strangers paying more on their bill in order to pay your rent.

On a personal note, I try to tip 40% at a restaraunt just because I know that the tip is most of what they make.
