Today, my boyfriend and I had a disagreement over the pronunciation of the word "train." It turned into a heated debate that lasted all night and ended with us sleeping in separate rooms. FML

How many ways are there to pronounce the word train..?

That's just loco. What were you trying to achieve?

FYL because the boyfriend is stubborn enough to argue to that extent about this shit. YDI because you are stubborn enough to argue to that extent about this shit.

Those of you who think "chrain" is impossible must be very linguistically naive. Most people say "chrain" and "chree"; the presence of the r causes the tongue to be retroflexed when articulating the t, resulting in a ch sound. Some people say "train" with a t supposedly, but they are rare.

Here's a little test for you. Get an audio clip of someone talking, using tr- and ch- words. Clip them down to just that first sound. Have someone else listen. Can they tell the difference? I have a vague, sticky hunch your global cast of "naivete" may be a projection of your own poor enunciation.

Is there two or more ways to pronounce that word? WTF?

Obviously, your boyfriend is challenged, and you should kick him to the curb if an incident like this leads to such an argument.

Be a grown up and apologize to him.. It's a stupid reason to fight.. That happens sometimes.. But when you realize it, you should apologize..

Today I learned that I pronounce Train as Ch-rain

Wow, I just learned something new today. I've always pronounced "tr" as "chr". I went to dictionary.com and clicked the pronunciation button for train over and over and it sounds to me like "chrain" too! It wasn't until I read someones comment that said some people have speach impediments that make it so they hear it as "chr" also that I realized this. I went back and listened again and I think I am starting to be able to hear and pronounce it better now. I've always felt that my mouth was the wrong shape (too exagerated) when pronouncing "tr", but wasn't able to do it the right way. I especially have trouble with the "str". "Street" comes out as "schreet" which doesn't feel right to say (kind of like I'm making a duck-face when saying it)!!
