Today, my class and I were discussing our country's relationship with other countries. One person stated that the French have never done anything for us. A classmate took that moment to chime in and ask, "I thought the French gave us that giant statue of the Mona Lisa?" He was dead serious. FML

OP here, when the second classmate made his announcement, everyone went silent (I swear crickets were chirping). He went into a ramble that sounded oddly like "the statue we got it in 1962." It took us all a few minutes to stifle our laughter to correct him. After that, yes someone did inform the first guy he was indeed wrong and told him several reasons why. At least it was a good way to kick off a what was slowly becoming a boring day. And yes I focused on the second guy a little bit more because I myself suck at history so I couldn't judge the first classmate too much. Especially when my previous schools skimmed over a lot of American history. If it wasn't for the books my mom showed me that she had on American history I wouldn't know much other than the basics. The education system I'm in really sucks.

They only gave the US their liberty, nothing much really

The French also sent troops to help us in our campaign for independence during the revolutionary war. They have done quite a bit for us.

And Leonardo Di Caprio painted the liberty

Damn it took him how many years to win an Oscar and yet no one gave him credit for painting an iconic statue?! Poor DiCaprio! Haha!

It's kinda amusing you seem to be focused on the student who got the wrong name(admittedly a pretty dumb mistake) rather than the student who claimed the French has done nothing for us.

There's a bunch of memes floating around with intentional wrong information. One of them calls it the Statue of Mona Lisa. Kid probably saw the meme and got confused.

This is the only FML I have read so far with comments that make me think that there are smart Americans after all

First France helped the US with the revolution and secondly gave us the statue of liberty. As for the people who said they took from Canada. that was wrong. Canada wonnthe battle of 1812 and took over the land. which they totally deserved. if you are unsure about your history just Google it. read a book.

France didn't give us the statue of liberty. A French architect did. The French government had nothing to do with it.

Of course we did ! It was a french who had the idea to create this monument as a symbol of the french-USA friendship. We created it with lots of differents fundraising as local taxes and gifts from the population and even the Ottoman empire !

and the French then said : let's make America great again....

One time, I had a classmate seriously think Asia was a country in Europe.

I'm pretty sure we can thank the french for their wonderful fries too.

Also, funny enough the grid iron waffle started in France then developed in Belgium.
