How big is the painting? If it's a small one, maybe you could stand it on a table or something instead?

I would advise you to purchase command strips, they work just as well as nails and you can remove them whenever you want leaving behind a clean wall.

Sometimes you just gotta take the risk. You deprive yourself of so much if you always worry about the unknown "what ifs" i suggest you go home grab your hammer and a nail spin around in circles until your nice a dizzy and then walk to the wall and whichever spot you come to first is where you hang the picture.

I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't want to put a hole in there wall. just patch it up and move on.
