Today, my grandma was sent to the hospital so I called out of work. My bosses told me that if I didn't come in I would be fired. I did so, only to find out they needed me there so I could close the restaurant while they left early to go to a party. FML

OP here, all of the suggestions saying go to a higher up are great, but the only reason I can't do that is because it's a family owned restaurant. I am the assistant manager and I've been working there for almost a year; I've only called out twice. My bosses are the owners son and nephew. There's not much I can do about the situation other than leave the job as this isn't the first time they've left early while I closed the restaurant. Thank you all for the concern about my grandmother. She is doing alright now and she's stable.

What the...? Can you complain to management?

I hope you explained to them the position you were in but if you did and they said that's what pricks they are who abuse their power

If they don't respect you enough to see that your priority should be family first, work second, then they aren't the type of people you should work for. Especially since they view their dumb party as of higher priority than your ill grandmother. I hate power hungry people. I honestly wouldn't have went to work. And side note, I'm glad your grandmother is doing better.

I know right! I feel like a boss that has sense would habe sent Op to the hospital.

I would have closed the business right after they left and left a note on the door explaining to the general public why it was closed and ended the note in bold letters " I quit".

Op be sure you talk to them afterwards and ask them why they think it was ok to make you come in when there was a family emergency and they were going to the party. I would even ask them if they think it would be fair if the situation was reversed and their family was in trouble and they had to choose between their job and their family member. See what they have to say and then consider getting another job.

You should apply elsewhere, **** that crooked business.

A friend of mine was killed in a car accident, I asked to leave work because I got the call saying she was in the hospital and wasn't going to make it. They said I couldn't leave... I left and never came back. I was a crying mess, not sure why they thought keeping me there was a good idea, I was so upset I was useless anyways.

When my dad died, I had this BIG programming project that had to be submitted the very next day. To get my mind off of it, I continued to complete it so I can just present it and get it done. Despite my professor knowing the news, he still showed no mercy. He decided to put me at the end of the line to present my project, AND made me stay late because he said he wanted "more", and made me do enhancements until the end of the day, else I was gonna fail the subject. He didn't even show any compassion towards me. Life is cruel sometimes, and I feel you. Wish people would somehow be more understanding when it comes to these things.

Your professor sounds like a sadistic psychopath.

Maybe he was trying to help you get your mind off it by making you work.

#41 That assumption is so far-fetched, it's almost stretching out of the solar system. With the way the professor is behaving, I doubt he's trying to 'take their mind off it', because no decent human being would cause so many setbacks and delays to a person who's loved one is on the verge of death, especially since it means they lose their precious last moments with them before they die.

Judging by the title of this FML, you know what to do

You need to find another job with people respect each other
