Today, my mom signed me up for a swimming class to show my sister there's nothing to be afraid of. Considering I'm 17, I assumed I'd be in an advanced class. Instead, I get to spend summer blowing bubbles in the shallow end with four-year-olds as my little sister cheers me on from the steps. FML

On the bright side, you're not drowning.

Your showing your little sister there's nothing to be scared of. You're a good big sis/bro

YDI: I've never done something, but I'm a teenager, so I must be advanced in it. Great logic. You could call and arrange for one-on-one lessons, you know.

Where does it say OP can't already swim? I read it as the mother wanted OP to show their sister that swimming classes weren't scary, but instead of signing them up to an age appropriate class, she signed them up to the class their sister would be doing.

Even if OP wasn't able to swim there are classes made for older people who can't swim. I taught the Adult Beginner swim class when I worked for the Y. Being in a class with small children and being on a similar level as them would be embarrassing for anyone.

I feel like OP isn't assuming she should be in a advanced class. Just that she should would be with people her age.

Wait I skipped the word advanced COMPLETELY. After reading it again you guys are right. Sorry.

the little sister should see OP doing the things she'll have to do when it's her turn for lessons. it could keep her from being scared. She may strive to do as well as the older sibling and do much better than if she didn't see how easy it is for OP.

I saw you swim tonight! My son is in your class. Ha, ha, ha!

Out of 7 billion people, you could have seen several people in a similar situation

Unfortunately, your age has little to do with your ability to swim. I've seen babies swim better than me and I'm 21. Anyway, it's nice that you can help your sister overcome her fear and learn something that could potentially save her life, even if you feel this particular method is embarrassing or demeaning.

You don't have to go, or at least switch to a class for your age group.

"Spend my summer blowing bubbles..." I have yet to see a problem

Just because you're 17 doesn't mean you know how to swim. I've watch lots of Olympics...doesn't make me a gymnast. Good job being a great big sis though :)

Think of it as teaching your sister? And that happened to me before - so embarrassing!

Just think, once you're finished, you'll be the world's only swimming potato.
