Make sure she pays for it. Hope you had an iCloud backup, OP!
make sure it really doesn't work using her phone
hopefully this means you demanded a new phone from them
YDI... This remind me of the kid who threw his brand new Apple Watch on the ground and expected it to come out unscathed (screen shattered)... and got pissed when it didn't live up to his standard of durability. "Testing" in science and the real world, is always done on other things before the final test on the actual subject... (As in the reason they test on animals before human trails, or build a model plain before building a real one). I'm all for experimentation and learning from your mistakes, I messed with the electronics in my car, and had over a thousand dollars in damages (from two separate incidences)... I don't know if you can afford a new phone, but if you can't afford for your experiments to fail, don't try... make sure you know what you're doing, make sure things work before hand... the prep work will save you so much pain and money.
Did you notice where it said the roommate tried? It means that it was done without permission. No where in this post says that the op agreed to it.
Ironically she must own a Samsung!

Test it with her iPhone to be sure.
Flush their phone down the toilet in response.
