Today, while at work, I went to unlock the washroom for a customer. Normally we don't allow customers to use the staff washrooms, so I was as surprised as the guy I found sitting on the toilet when I opened the door. FML

You probably scared the shit out of him.

Isn't this why stores often have washrooms for the customers.

You don't normally? Yet you were going to let someone in yourself, obviously it's not that uncommon.

No, actually there are times when it's just kind to differ from the norm, like if the customer is pregnant, elderly, or a child, or otherwise has some reason its hard for them to control their pee needs. I used to work at Walgreens and if people ask, it means they really need to go, so I would usually let them in.

This is from Canada so I can just Imagine that conversation. "I'm so sorry sir I should have knocked. " No sir I'm sorry I shouldn't be in here employees only" "Again Sorry"

Well since you went to unlock it for a customer wouldn't it be reasonable to assume another staff member could also do so? Besides shouldn't you knock first in case another staff member is in there even if you wouldn't think somebody else would let a customer in? Unless you're working alone, but I don't actually know anywhere that allows that at all. I feel bad for the guy on the toilet though.

I work alone most Sundays at the Baskin Robbins I work at so it can't be all too uncommon, I mean it is a small store. Though on really hot summer days working alone is not the business...

Bathroom for customers only I would take it...but still I find that a bit strange along with how did he get there?

I don't get it. You went to unlock it for a customer but you dont allow customers in there. Maybe some other employee unlocked it for some other customer earlier. In that case you should have tried knocking. Please somebody explain this to me.

35 - they don't *usually* allow customers to use the restroom. This implies there are some exceptions made occasionally. As it is uncommon that customers are allowed to use the restroom, it is logical that it would be assumed that the restroom would be free unless a staff member was in there. I'm assuming OP knew where the other staff were, as in small stores (which this sounds like) you usually know where each other is, so OP could assume the restroom was empty (as usually customers aren't allowed in there). As you can see, a lot of assumptions (all valid) that led to this situation occurring

Maybe another employee unlocked it for him.

Oh man over 40 comments and no ones mentioned that one pun. Way to go guys!
