Accidental racist

Today, I was accused of racism for mentioning that an employee can't read. That would've been racist… if she could actually read. FML

If someone can't read, it doesn't have anything to do with ethnicity.

Interesting, in the US minority are basically sacred. Curious that the same values are sinking into Canada.

These days, everything turns into that if people think it’s the root of everything wrong in their life. Whether it is, or isn’t, it’s become the cry of a lot of people. Racism exists as proof of this. “It’s (insert race) fault i’m stuck at a shit job!” No, it’s you not brushing up skills and refusing to learn new or better your skills. Not Jose working in a sweatshop keeping you from a system admin job. It’s almost always something blamed. “It’s McDonald’s fault I’m fat!” Pretty sure it’s eating 4 ½ pounders with cheese 3 out of 4 meals a day.

I'm sure this is more of a cultural/poverty issue. Though there's actually a very strong relationship between ethnicity and literacy. Hispanic/Latino: 41% of adults have "below basic" literacy levels. Black/African American: 24% of adults have "below basic" literacy levels. Native American/Alaska Native: ~20-25% of adults have "below basic" literacy levels (data is limited, but this is an estimate). White/Caucasian: 9% of adults have "below basic" literacy levels. Asian American: 7% of adults have "below basic" literacy levels.
