Its a sad fact of life that people often have motives they aren't sharing for the things they do. We might think a person is just friendly and generous while in reality they are interested in more than that. OP, when your "friend" learned you weren't interested in them romantically or sexually, they took your word for that and dropped their pursuit of you... Gay, straight, male, female, it's something that many people do. They pursue a relationship with what seems like friendship at first but ultimately, they are hoping for more. Then if rejected they might continue trying, but most sensible people know when to drop the pursuit. And of course, rejection hurts... OP, you did nothing wrong. But never go out without the means to pay for your meal and the means to get home, no matter what the other person says.
