Did her mother specify how she wanted her hair cut or did she just say go wild and do whatever you think is best? Usually parents say something that will give some type of hint as to what their child's gender is...

I think we need to know how you cut the kids hair before we truly judge you. Did you cut all her hair off or did you just refer to her as a boy while you gave her a trim? In this day and age it's not unreasonable to see a boy with long hair so even if you were assuming it was a boy why would you go straight to chopping it off without some kind of discussion if that is indeed what you did?
