You should do what my mom does. She puts it back in my grandmother's purse when she's not looking and my grandmother thinks she just missed it and it had always been there.
Rude is rude, it doesn't matter how old you are. Her grandson is basically telling her that he didn't do it for money he did it for her, and she finds some way to get pissy about it and then throws his mom under the bus on top of it. Getting old doesn't excuse you from common courtesy, sorry.
