That's not legal being stuck in a broken elevator is in no way a break. You should've explained that and then went on to say pursuant to labour guidelines for 7 hours of work I am entitled to 30 minutes for lunch. You were at work it's not your fault the elevator broke.
Wow, I hope OP doesn't take any real advice from this forum. Quit your job? Sue? People like that are my job security, so thanks to you all. Yea, it sucks, but take a look at the job market. Good luck. I've missed a few lunches too, but in less than 24 months I make triple of my starting pay. Now I make my own hours and eat lunch when I want, and my child has a better life because of it as well. Showing him who's boss will still leave you jobless in the short term, and nobody on this forum will pay your bills during the court case. Again, good luck. Great/ interesting post, the irony was amusing, but 80% of the advice given is questionable at best.
I don't even get time to eat on an 8 hour shift, why are people complaining about this being illegal? It's one day.
How do you know it's illegal? Do you know what state he lives in? Is it a part of a union? Quit giving advice on things you don't know about, you're going to get the man in trouble... There's no federal law mandating breaks for work for adults and in states such as Florida 12 hours is 100% legal
Well that's stupid, simply being away from one's post- especially if stuck in an elevator and physically unable to return- doesn't constitute a "break". It's definitely worthy of an HR report. I'm curious as to what type of setting OP works in. If in an office, eating food at one's desk should be easy enough to pull off. Even though it doesn't make up for a break, at least it's a chance to eat. However, if not in an office setting, then that really sucks. Since everyone's weekly and daily schedules can be different, I wonder if the 5 hour segment was between lunch and the next break, or lunch and clocking out for the day.
Well he shouldn't be surprised if you then did shoddy work because you were too hungry to focus. I should think getting stuck in a lift is not relaxing.
This is ridiculous! So what you didnt get to each lunch. Life happens. I work 12 hour days with no breakfast or lunch because i am too busy to leave!! (I am a 21 year old girl in a mans field btw) Be happy you have a job and are getting paid. Also, next time i suggest taking the stairs.
sue him, company equipment failure does not mean you don`t get a break
Thay sucks, OP. In the U.S. we would call that "a great reason to file a lawsuit."
And frankly it's embarrassing. Man up.
For one, I'm not a man so that would be weird. For another, you prefer bosses who feel free to be abusive?
Abusive is a strong word, and a bit dramatic. But I like having a job and I don't let my boss's poor management skills stop me from paying my bills or putting food on the table for my son. Learning how to work through difficult situations is part of life. Pack a granola bar!! :)
Can you eat while working. And I don't think getting stuck in an elevator equates to having your lunch break

Is that even legal?
Your boss is a dick! Can't you make a complaint about him? :L
