Safety should always be on unless you're ready to fire. The second you're done firing (at a range or in defense) even before it's set back down, the safety is back on. If all this was properly done and it was an accident, I'm sorry OP. That blows! (off toes!)
Take it back. You're very lucky your AD (accidental discharge) ONLY cost you two toes. You or a loved one could have easily been killed. Return it and get a can of mace. You're not firearms material.
maybe take more training... or if you are truly clumsy don't own a gun. also maybe dont keep it loaded without the safety on. some people simply should not own guns. I love guns, but my hands spasm and I tend to drop thing or break things by my hands closing, not often but i dont trust it to not happen at a bad time. so i just go to a range with a spotter. if it's for defences, get a dog or mace, or paintball gun and unattached hopper of mace balls.
What did you do, buy a pistol from the 1960s or something? A brand new, modern gun shouldn't simply fire from dropping it. And how the heck did it blow your toes off from hitting the floor? That would mean it was firing DOWNWARD.....which is a bit odd if it's already on the ground. This sounds like some lame attempt at showing you're actually anti-gun.
I mean, unless she dropped it, tried to catch it by the trigger, it was pointed at her toes, and it was a light trigger... but she didn't say that and that's hard to believe.
I don't understand how.
