This is a tricky situation, personally I've dealt with two situations like this, one was a friend of mine who had some sort of mental illness and said things like that alot because he was obsessed with werewolves, and the other one was one I stopped hanging out with because it turned out he didn't have any friends because he was an asshole. It'd be best to dig a little deeper. A lot of people generalize "weirdos" as having the exact same defensive personality, but they're actually just as diverse as your more "normal" people. Let him get to know you :)

Or maybe he just has an odd sense of humor and wants you to leave him alone. Going in calling him the "weird kid" means you already had prejudices against him, why would he want popular kids to be his charity friends that will later stab him in the back?
