Today, I took my girlfriend to a beginners’ painting class. She and everyone else was able to produce a painting significantly better than mine, and I got laughed at for my lack of skill. I’ve been painting for twenty-five years. FML

I think that says one of two things. Either it really is a case where beauty is subjective (would Picasso have done well there?) or doing something for a long time is no guarantee of skill... OP, I assume you paint because you enjoy doing it. Just continue doing so. A hobby is like that. What counts is how it makes you feel, not what others think. On the other hand, if you had aspirations of painting as a career, its probably time to look elsewhere.

this is actually fairly common. you’ve honed your skill to yourself and now when trying a new technique or following less complex instructions than you’re used to it’s like relearning the basics again. I’m in a lot of online creative groups and it happens so frequently
