@ 150 I am beyond glad that you did and was largely unaffected by it, just like there are some people that can put a cigarette down and never look back, those people pissed me off the most when I quit. It still doesn't change my point, you cannot change something that was once such an integral part of society without some repercussions. Nothing gets done overnight, and just like with other addictions, we need to help others instead of just condemning. What I am getting at is those who have never tried it (and I say from experience, DON'T EVER START!) act like it is just as easy to stop as it is to start. I say: Get your heads out of your asses and start treating this as it is, a physical and mental addiction that needs treatment and support. Stop treating those that smoke like sub humans and actually try to help. No one is perfect.
wow OP I feel you. I'm severely allergic to latex and people at parties (friends and family, usually) who KNOW I'm allergic think its funny to throw balloons at me. granted these were strangers...people are jackasses. however I would've explained the allergy and maybe they would've issued an apology.
Although it's a bit difficult to explain the allergy when you're coughing (like the OP) or suffocating (like me). Just saying.
I have had hives and a half swollen tongue and was still able to say, "I'm allergic, stop please." albeit in a rather unpleasant tone. I'm sure OP will or at some point in time will encounter the people who did this and can explain it. OP still deserves an apology.
I know your pain - I always end up in a coughing fit from smoke (and other strong-smelling stuff, really), but most of the time I get treated like "an overzealous non-smoker trying to drop a hint". The only hint is that my lungs are sensitive, and I'd tell people that fact if not for being too busy coughing! Thankfully, if I'm just walking past, I can take in a breath of fresh air and hold it until I've walked past - it's a lot less noticeable and offensive than covering my nose, or something. Ridiculous that I have to consider that to be potentially offensive, but then again there are people out there who get offended over the most trivial of things at the drop of a hat! (Heck, sometimes people even get offended that you've dropped a hat!)
I'm so glad it's not just me--I'm 17 and since I was six I've been allergic to strong smells, but cigarettes, weed smoke & other smokes and smells really get to me. Has your sensitivity been getting worse? Or is that in my head maybe?
YDI for thinking that reaction is an allergy.
Smoking is psychosomatic? Or coughing? Or asthma? Or allergies? You really should be more clear when whining...
Smokers can be really obnoxious in defending their habit. The "it's none of your business" one really gets me. Sure, your smoking is your business. But guess what? Your smoking becomes my business when you start blowing smoke in my face! If you're smoking somewhere out of the way where it isn't going to bother anyone, go right ahead. But if you're too lazy to go to the appointed place and feel like standing at the entrance to a building instead, you don't get to play the "it's my business" card.
Why not, do you own the air? In most cities, the air you're breathing (sans nicotine) isn't actually all that much healthier than cigarette smoke anyway. Get off your high horse, buddy. Also, if you're standing close enough to someone that they can physically blow smoke in your face, you might want to consider getting out of their personal space. Please try to be less condescending in future, thank you.
Thatz bullshit..

I get horrible migraines from cigarette smoke. It really shouldn't be allowed outside popular buildings like that.
You should just tell them that smoking kills. Because if they smoke around you, you'll kill them.
