Looking for love in Alderaan places

By not4geeks - This FML is from back in 2009 but it's good stuff - United States

Today, I went out on a first date with a cute guy. Turns out we won't be going on a date again because I didn't know the difference between "Star Wars" and "Star Trek." FML

How do you not know the difference? YDI. I'm a girl, and I'd dump you for that. It's proof positive that your interests clash.

Who cares if she didn't know the difference. Not everyone follows things as a "cultural phenomenon". It's ok. I couldn't tell you the difference between the two either. Star Trek, Star Wars. Backstreet Boys, Nsync. It's all the same in my book.

If I were a guy, I wouldn't dump you but I'd take it as a bad sign. Yes, I'm a nerd, but everybody and their mother knows the difference between the two if they haven't been living under a rock.

Ok, he shouldnt have dumped you for that but seriously, who doesn't know the difference !! I'm a girl and I absolutely love Star Wars, you should invest some time in watching these amazing movies. Maybe read the novel if you have the time.

I'm a straight male who doesn't watch TV, but I know the difference between Grey's Anatomy and The Hills. I'm guessing you really DO know the difference between the two, but made an honest mistake mixing them up, and you're not getting a second date for an even better reason. Maybe he doesn't like girls who think they're cute when they play dumb.

And yet I wouldn't get offended if someone didnt know the difference between on of my 'everythings' I'm not that ridiculous.

I'm not offended by that. I made that very clear. You are offended that this girl was "dumped." She's not upset by it, she's offended because she was "dumped" by a "loser." I don't care that she doesn't like scifi. I don't care that she doesn't know the difference. I care when I'm called a loser and a weirdo and a nerd. THAT is why you're both idiots.

Anyone who would dump someone over not knowing the difference of something, CLEARLY has their priorities mixed up. They're probably lonely people anyway, that just sit at home and play WOW all day.

First off, she wasn't dumped. She just didn't get a second date. It's not like this was a relationship. It was a date. Second, I DO NOT FOR ONE SINGLE SOLITARY SECOND believe that she just got it mixed up. No, I guarantee you she made a teeny mistake, was corrected on it, and said "Oh, what's the difference ? That crap's all the same to me." Then probably said something like only losers like that stuff anyway. Because like I said.. she isn't upset. This was only one date. She just can't believe she got "dumped" by such a "loser."

I love that so many people said YDI to this. That new movie is bringing out the inner Trekkie in everyone! Geeks represent!

Meh, regardless of the circumstances behind it, whether she's an idiot for not knowing the difference (protip: She is.) or because she's an idiot for being so absorbed in herself as to be offended that she was dumped by someone she sees as inferior to herself (protip: She is.), it's an all-around YDI. Committing cultural heresy is one thing, stomping all over someone else's interests is another. Relationships with clashing interests don't work, and he was correct to not call you again. You're going to be better off getting with someone who likes what you do, whatever that may be- and he'll feel the same. I've decided i'm not going to date someone unless they're into MMORPGs and/or Magic. If they called magic yu-gi-oh there probably wouldn't be much more to talk about. I agree with jfox, you probably said something like "it's retarded to be into this stuff." But if i had a girl i was chilling with and she said "I'm not really into Magic, but i'd be willing to try it," not only would i see an opportunity to have a new player in our group, but i'd see someone who cares enough to try to spend time with me. tl;dr you're an idiot, op.
