Please get him into therapy asap. I'd highly recommend DBT. Or if you choose just a general therapist, just make sure you research them and the types of therapy they do. This is going to be a very delicate situation to correct and ensuring that he's not going to be traumatized by his therapist is very important. I'd also highly recommend you and his mom seek therapy to make sure you're both equipped with the proper skills to help manage the situation at home, too.
