Sounds about right. How could you **** up that badly? How hard were you trying to punch your friend that your miss had enough momentum to hit an innocent bystander?
In a school setting (& in team sports), it's always the person retaliating that usually gets into trouble, not the attacker (w/o Instant Replay by referees for the latter). It's one of those zero-tolerance policies, but this is a good one that (attempts to) prevent bullying. Next time hit your friend's arm when off school grounds. After that, if he hits your arm a third time, then he'll be worrying all during the school day AND afterwards about when you're going to "return the favor." Better yet, do so a day or two later to make him keep worrying esp. if you first (quietly!) tell him in school that you're going to get back at him, but that he won't know when or where. As the Klingons say, "Revenge is a dish best served cold." But yea, throwing a punch blindly before you're certain of whom/ what you're going to strike is bad impulse control unfortunately for all of you. :-(
situational awareness is a must. don't swing if you don't know what's around you.
So you did something you didn't want to do because you were motivated by fear? That's called being a wimp.
