Relatable

Today, I turned 25. I'm single, still living at home and doing an unpaid internship in an industry I have no interest in, because it was the only accepted application after 6 months of unemployment. The daily 45-minute drive means I'm losing money every week for being "employed" with a PhD. FML

That sucks! You're 25 with a PhD that's impressive. I'm 25 and still trying to figure out how the toaster works.

I'm sorry things haven't been working out lately, OP. Hopefully you have support from family and friends, and who knows, maybe the connections you make in your internship will somehow help you in the future - even just as references. Best of luck to you!

You need to move. Don't expect life to just unfold because you showed up. You have to cut your own road.

I'm 24 own my own house and only went to trade school. Colege is useless

Except it may teach you how to correctly spell college.

I'm 25, single, living at home, unemployed because of my v.bad hearing and anxiety/depression and still have no ******* idea what to do with my life. High five!

go talk to people in other departments that are more interesting. they're always looking for free labor so you can at least switch to a field you like. experience to get experience indeed. but try to pick a field that correlates with well paying jobs if possible

Tell me about it. This summer I was working three different unpaid internships, two of which were 45 minutes away and one of which I could only get to by a toll bridge. If this doesn't get me into vet school I'll probably cry. Luckily I do have a paid job now, but I moved to another state to get it.

OH.....MY.....GOD.....You mean you actually had to move somewhere? Why would you EVER consider taking that job.

Why did you invest so much time (and money) into achieving a phd in a field you have no interest in? What are your real interests, what are you most passionate about? Answer that question and follow your dreams. Having absolutely no motivation will not get you anywhere, only make you more depressed and inefficient. Perhaps your dreams may not lead to the same financial rewards as the industry you have a phd in, but you will enjoy the bets perks a job can give you: Happiness and not having to truly work a day in your life.

In the UK, university is only 3 years, and it's only one additional year to get a masters degree. I'm sure a PhD isn't far off from that.

go get a class A CDL ull make plenty of money

So there are 2 options here... #1 you spent 5+ years going to school to get a PhD in a field you have no interest in (which means it's your fault) #2 You made the assumption (incorrectly might I add) that because you have a PhD, that someone was going to hand you a job offer the month after you graduate (which also means it's your fault) P.S. McDonald's may not pay more than minimum wage, but it still pays better than a unpaid internship.

@51 Those aren't options, those are observations. Also, Op didn't say he got a PhD in a field he wasn't interested in, only that he works in a field he isn't interested in. Lastly, McDonald's pays more, but the internship will give him the right experience.
