Source?

By Anonymous - 17/02/2016 13:16 - Canada - Brossard

Today, I sent an email to my teacher asking if a source was a primary source, he replied yes. I got my grade back for my essay and it was worse than I expected. My teacher said it was because I didn't use a primary source. I showed him the email, to which he replied, "Well, I was wrong in the email." FML

Same thing different taste

Underfunded and underappreciated

Today, I got back the essay I wrote about how my country's education system is fucked. At one point, I made a spelling mistake. My teacher wrote a note about it, basically calling me illiterate, and telling me to pay attention in school instead of whining about it. She misspelled "school". FML

He shouldn't be taking points off of your grade for his own mistake. That doesn't seem fair

Been there, had that done to me. Took a writing class, got an A on every assignment. The final which counted for double, I aced. The Professor gave me a B. When I asked why he said, "I never give an A for a final grade." I spent months trying to make a case and got no where. I feel your pain.

My Social Studies teacher in 10th grade went on maternity leave and the guy who subbed for her was seriously pro-nazi. None of us students liked him but for some reason he particularly didn't like me. He failed all of my papers and tests no matter how well it was written. At one point I was on crutches. Almost every teacher would let you go a minute or two early so you could get to your next class or to catch the bus if it was your last class. He wouldn't let me go so I could get to the bus before it left but he would let another girl in the class on crutches go. So a friend and I decided to see if it was me or it was him. He agreed to give me one final extra credit and if I could pass it he would give me a passing grade in the class. My friend, who was within the top of our class and is now an ADA, wrote the paper for me. He gave me a 70 on it. She was furious. I passed the class though just barely and was kind of glad that I could prove to someone what was going on; even if we couldn't tell anyone about or we would've gotten in trouble for cheating.

Yikes. Why didn't your parents do anything? Or were you reluctant to bring it to them because of the BS about how students should deal with teachers being assholes by themselves? What he was doing was highly unethical and would have been enough to get him dismissed. My brother was on crutches during elementary school, and the school assigned a teacher to bring him lunch since he couldn't carry the tray. Said teacher assigned a student to do it, who proceeded to faff about and use the money in my brothers lunch account to buy himself a second tray. Long story short, it was a big reason behind her termination of contract and the school had to refund the money. My point in that was that it really didn't matter that he didn't want to let you leave early- if you had a medical note stating you needed accommodations for medical reasons, him refusing to grant them was grounds for termination of his contract, at least in most schools in the states. (Unless the twat has tenure, but I don't even know if subs can get tenure...)

When I was on crutches in middle school and high school (fell down a flight of stairs in 7th grade, tripped over something and landed funny in 10th, did something in 12th but don't remember what) I was told to "hop or don't eat". It didn't matter that I had the doctor's note saying that I needed help and that I needed to eat a lot (I was really skinny, as in almost unhealthily skinny even though I ate a ton, and am still pretty skinny, to skinny in my doctor's opinion). I fell the first time with the "hop" option since I couldn't put weight on my broken leg (broke the bone worse, despite the cast too), so I ended up going with the "don't eat" option. Got very dizzy and almost ended up having to go to the ER for falling because of the dizziness but the school didn't care. This school also refused to call my parents (or anyone on the emergency cards) when I threw my back out in gym. They just let me lie on the ground, yelled at me for it happening (I was bawling my eyes out from the pain and could barely move) and failed me for the day. Mom tried to complain but they just basically told her "not my (the school's) problem" and "too bad, so sad, now suck it up". I learned very quickly to just give up and count the days until I was done.

Forgot to type my point (I have a bad headache, sorry). Sometimes schools (and teachers) do what they want and get in no trouble whatsoever, even though they should. I had several medical notes from various doctors saying that I couldn't do things (because of health reasons and the fact that my bones seem to snap easy) but the school was always telling me that I "didn't need extra time to get to classes" when I was on crutches and in a very obvious cast because I "was faking", "didn't need weight restrictions" because of my back after throwing it out with a very loud crack (that the teacher heard) followed by a scream of pain and sobbing, "didn't need to leave the classroom all the time" even though I have a condition that makes me vomit a lot. It only took one time of me vomiting in the room before that rule changed for the most part, though I did have a few teachers who were more stubborn about the "no one leaves" policy and I ended up vomiting on the floor by their feet (got detention for it too but worth it I guess) because sometimes these things can't wait "until the next class or between the classes" which was when we were allowed to go (class was about 45 minutes or so long and we had 3-5 to get to class and you couldn't be late). I also "didn't need to eat" if I couldn't carry it myself (like when I was on crutches) despite all my classmates getting to eat since they were "able bodied". All of this had notes from my doctors but the school just ignored them. With luck, school will be over soon and you will have graduated.

#43 - My parents wouldn't have believed me or I would've went to them. I had been saying that he didn't like me for awhile and they just thought I was making excuses for my bad grades. And he didn't have tenure, he was a completely new sub.

#54/57 Sorry all of that has happened to you. Luckily I haven't been in high school for almost 9 years.

I graduated in 2010 and am glad I am away from that place. I did learn to ALWAYS carry a small amount of food in my binder (jerky, crackers, candy, etc. things that wouldn't spoil), how to "hobble fast" and stay out of the way of the flow of traffic (and can actually hobble just about as fast as I can run), and that if the teachers are being stubborn about the "no one leaves, no excuses" rule (that they created, I asked a different teacher who was always very nice, very understanding, and very helpful), aim for right beside their shoes (that might be the small part of me that's mean). As I said, I would often get detention for it even though it was on my records and I had notes from my doctors that I have the Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome and can't control it, but they got mad and I got in trouble. I wasn't happy about it but can serve detention if I need to. The fact that my teachers let me just lay on the field after I knocked my back out during class without calling anyone but deciding that it was my fault for being that way (medically) and yelling at me for it as I'm already sobbing and can't move (I couldn't even lay all the way down since I threw out my upper back, my shoulders were stuck up) and there was a huge crack that everyone heard, so it's obvious that something bad happened. When the class was over (it was during the summer so I wouldn't have to take it during the year) they carried my bag out to my uncle (who was picking up my cousin too), tossed my bag in and told him "she hurt herself during class" and walked away as if nothing was wrong. He had to call my parents (who were at work) and try to get the story out of me (who was still crying from the pain) and my cousin so he could tell my parents. There were 4 instructors there: the female health teacher, the female coach, the male gym teacher, and the assistant principal. You'd think someone could think "We should call her parents." My parents weren't happy, my uncle wasn't happy, the chiropractor wasn't happy, I wasn't happy… it didn't matter. The chiropractor wrote notes about "no lifting" "no bending" and basically everything we might be doing in class because he didn't want me to end up in a wheelchair because of them. They still made me do everything despite the notes (luckily I didn't end up in the wheelchair like what could've happened, but I had to use a brace for quite a while after that class was finally done). The chiropractor noticed that I wasn't getting better and kept getting worse so I told him about having to go against his restrictions. He wasn't happy but they avoided all punishment somehow.

******* hell, I am really actually pretty pissed off on the behalf of both of you. I guess I was lucky in that my mother was known for raising hell over stuff like that. I'm pretty sure some of the stuff you described is flat out illegal and cause for a lawsuit, but stuff like that is usually in retrospect... And might not matter in since many school are government funded. I guess it might have helped that the town I live in is relatively small, for all that the schools are overpopulated, since my mom is really well known. I hate that the schools you went to are so damn corrupt and lazy, though. I hope that the staff members that treated you that way had it bite them in the ass majorly. Especially since I am now very sure that the behaviors you mentioned about neglect toward injuries that happened on school grounds are 100% illegal, especially the refusal of treatment and refusal to contact guardians. (I'd probably have been sent to jail for multiple counts of murder if I were in your parents' shoes.) #60, no offense towards you meant, but your parents sound like ignorant assholes for not even considering that you were telling the truth. That sounds far worse than having telephone-pole-up-the-ass for a teacher.

What an asshole! you should report him immediately

Take it to the principal and have the grade changed. You shouldn't have a bad grade because the teacher is an idiot.

If you are in college you can fight the grade because of instances like that. Don't accept the grade. Fight it!!

One time I got a bad grade because the teacher thought I plagiarized. She couldn't believe that someone in middle school could write so eloquently. Never mind that she had no idea where I "stole" my work from. There was no google in those days lol

You've got proof that the teacher said it was a primary source. Take it up to the Principal and have your grade changed.

If we're sharing shitty teacher stories, here's mine. I was in my second year of highschool and managed to give myself a major concussion about a month in. (I do mean major. I hit my head, blacked out for at least 30 minutes, woke up and then went to school like that.) As a result, I missed about 10 days straight because the injury had completely tucked up my sense of balance to the point I couldn't even walk without being at risk of a fall, and the injury also worsened and made my migraines far more frequent. I got three different doctor notes saying that all absences should be considered 'medically excused,' meaning they couldn't count against my attendance minimum to advance, my minimum attendance to pass a class, participation based grades were (supposed to be) automatic 100s, and that I was entitled to all make up work as long as I asked for it, with an extended time on turning in said make up work. So I was missing classes usually two or three times a week, and would routinely ask my teachers for my make up work. My criminal justice teacher (who was also a cop) always told me that there wasn't anything I had to make up or that I missed besides book reading. So fall exams rolled around and it was the first time the high school was letting students be exempt from the exams if they had a B or higher in that class. I asked her what my grade was an if I would be exempt and she says, "What? Are you kidding? You have an F, you haven't done any of your missed work." Me: "What missed work? You said I didn't have any missed work." Her: "Over half the work for the last eight weeks. I don't have give your make up work to you, you should have gotten someone to write down the assignments for you. It Isn't my job to keep track of what assignments you turn in. Get them from someone now, and get them to me by the end of the week. Keep in mind even if you get them in now and get a 100 on your exam I won't pass you." Me: -raising voice so whole class can hear- "So you didn't give me my work, because you didn't want to give me the work you are required to give me?" Her: "Yes, I think you don't deserve to pass if you can't come to class like a normal student." Me: "Right, I'm going to principal and discussing this with him." Her: "No you aren't. If you leave this room I'm giving you a zero on your exam." Me: "I really don't care at this point, lady. My mom's in the hospital because of a seizure, I'm recovering from a major head injury, you've lied to me the entire term, and now you're trying to screw me over because you're offended I didn't come to class despite a medical document, that your place employment accepted, stating that my grade could not be altered due to attendance. I'm going to talk to him, and we're going have a chat about why you are so arrogant as to sabotage students' educational records because you've got a complex." Her: "Fine, go talk to him, but I'm still failing you. He's not going to care so I hope you enjoy your failing grade that you earned by being disrespectful." Me: "Yeah, he's totally not going to care that one of the teachers working for the school he's built his reputation on for thirty years just admitted to a room full of students that she disregards not just the school boards rules but the educational protection laws for the state." And that's how I got a teacher-slash-cop fired from her teaching position of six years and made it so she had to move out of the county because none of the schools or police precincts would hire her. She did manage to stick an F on my school file, when I talked to the principal years later he agreed that it shouldn't have been placed as I was not only medically withdrawn from the class, but had withdrawn without taking the exam. Even if it didn't come off, considering the bitch had to move just for her an her husband to find work, I say it was worth it.

Honestly I wonder why people click "YDI" when they totally didn't

I think there are people who just click it for literally everything. Trying to be fair, in this case, maybe some of them think the student should have known on their own what a primary source was. That is pretty basic info. As for myself though, in the end I honestly cannot fault them. They weren't sure, they tried to make sure, and the mistake of someone who should have known better misled them (and even tried to saddle them with the fault).
