The war on Christmas

By drive thru madness - 25/12/2016 12:15 - United States - Amherst

Today, I was working the drive-thru. Everything was going fine until I handed a customer her order and said, "Happy Holidays". Before she drove off, she yelled, "it's Merry Christmas, bitch" and threw her coffee at the window. I'm Jewish and was trying to be polite. FML

People take the whole "happy holidays" versus "merry Christmas" thing WAY too seriously. Just be grateful they said anything nice to you at all, ungrateful pricks.

This "Merry Christmas" verses "Happy Holidays" battle is bullshit. If someone says "Merry Christmas" to you and you're not Christian, appreciate they're being polite and leave it be. If someone says "Happy Holidays" and the political correctness annoys you because you don't believe people should use that term, appreciate they are just considering others and get the **** over it.

You should've said "Happy Hannukah". I don't believe in Holidays. I believe it should be Merry/Happy (Insert Your Holiday) and be done with it. It may not be PC, but perhaps they should consider that it was nice for you to say anything at all.

Why does it matter at all? Who cares if someone says happy holidays? And surely, by what you've said, someone who isn't religious would say that anyway. Besides, it kind of sounds like that customer would've gotten angry if OP had said anything other than merry Christmas. I really don't get why people care so much about how others phrase their well-wishes

Welcome to 2016, where everything is offensive!

Regardless of whether you are Jewish or not, your first priority is to your customers. On CHRISTMAS DAY ITSELF, in a country that was founded on Christian ideals, where 76% of the country is white and the vast majority of Americans are Christian, you kind of have an obligation to say "Merry Christmas". Saying "Happy Holidays" is bad for your business. I own a small business and I put up "Merry Christmas!" slogans, and our business BOOMED from the tons of happy people who were refreshed a company still had the balls to say Merry Christmas. Sure, if you see a Muslim guy or a guy with a Yamekah hat who looks Jewish, then ok, maybe you say "Happy Holidays" or whatever. But for the everyday white customer or hispanic or black customer who isnt obviously Muslim or Jewish? Just say Merry Christmas. Nobody is going to get mad at you, in America, for saying Merry Christmas, on Christmas freaking day. And no, you aren't polite by saying Happy Holidays. You are being demeaning and patronizing and insulting the savior who died for your sins, literally. You are slapping American tradition in the face and slapping in the face all of the millions of veterans who died, the vast majority of whom were Christians fighting for freedom.

Oh don't be ridiculous. What difference does the wording make? Why can't you just be happy that another person is wishing you well? People go on about how it's silly to get upset over people saying merry Christmas and then get equally upset over people saying happy holidays. Who cares? The sentiment is the same. I'm sure 'the saviour' would just be happy that people are trying to spread peace and we'll wishes, no?

If you're Jewish and trying to be polite, say Merry Christmas. It doesn't mean you're suddenly a Christian because you said that. Trying to change it into 'happy holidays' is likely to annoy people, and for good reason.

What 'good reason' is there for getting annoyed over someone saying happy holidays? Literally all it means is 'I hope you have a nice time with whatever you may or may not be celebrating'. Why do you care so much about how people word their nice sentiments towards you? You know what they mean so why does it make the slightest bit of difference what word they use? Very petty.

This year Christmas fell during Hanukkah... doesn't happen every year, but is nowhere near a rare occurrence... so yes, it WAS Christmas... but it was ALSO Hanukkah... therefore it was more than one holiday... So "happy holidays"... that's why I always either make no mention of it and tell customers my standard "have a good night" unless they say something first and then I just parrot it back to them... I get my share of crazy drive thru customers... I feel your pain

Have a Merry Christmas If that offends you I'll help you pack your bags

I agree its merry Christmas! people that say happy holidays drive me bonkers. religion has nothing to do with it say it and move on!

Why does it matter? Don't you think it's a bit petty to be so bothered about the words people use to wish you well? It all means the same thing.
