Today, a co-worker invited me to go out for lunch with him. I politely declined, saying I had too many errands to do. The truth is that I'm just too broke. I'll be buying myself a burrito using quarters I found on the floor of my car. FML

OP here! I appreciate everyone's feedback and helpful comments! Although I make considerably less than most of my coworkers because I have only been here about 7 months, I have no room to complain. I just thought this story would make a good FML. Me and my boyfriend make a decent living on our own and this situation happened after I had to fork out some money on some unexpected expenses! I do pack my own lunch about 4 out of 5 days and have actually been working on budgeting a lot more! Even reading Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover.. I have definitely noticed a lot of money saved by not eating out as much as I used to!

Don't be ashamed of not having money.. It happens.. Just be upfront and take a rain check with your co-worker. They should understand

Simply say, "I would love to, but budget is tight this month. I'm very sorry! Maybe next time, though?" That can't hurt anything, and maybe he'll offer to pay! :) I hope things go better in the future!

It's time to take up Extreme Couponing.

And then he can have 32 cans of tuna, 25 paper towel rolls, 12 sticks of butter and a box of cat litter for only, $9.54!

Couponing is pretty wicked actually, I don't understand why more people don't do it. If you can get something for free why pay for it?

#26, I agree! Although with extremes couponers they still spend money on all those newspapers, and use a ton of the time they could use looking for a job to save them from having to do such "extreme" couponing in the first place.

You should have just said, "sorry, I am broke right now." They probably would have offered to pay, and when you have some extra money, you can pay. There is no shame in being broke, almost everyone has been there at some time.

Coinstar;-) Don't feel bad OP, I've been there before. For the people making,"manage your $$$" comments. Besides what the Fml says, no one knows OP's situation. He may have just started the job. Even if they haven't the economy still sucks and most jobs don't pay that well, anyway.

Coinstar charges a fee; why not just go to an actual bank?

#42 I've used coinstar for the convience of it being located in so many places. Also, you don't get the charge if you convert your money into a gift card which they could've used on a restaurant.

Hmmm maybe you should pack your lunch so you don't have to scrounge change from the floorboards for a practically nothing meal.

I sympathize OP, I've eaten my share of mustard sandwiches. But wanderingshopper has a point, a loaf of bread and some ham or PB or whatever and you're set for lunches for a week. Also easier to say "sorry I packed a lunch, need to watch my budget these days" than to talk about your situation or accept charity..

I used to do salsa, rice and pinto beans. $20 will buy you two weeks worth of food for two, and it's actually pretty tasty. You know what, scratch the used to, I still make it at least once a week, love that stuff.

I'm sure he'd understand if you just explain. In pretty sure everyone knows that money is tight these days.

Go with him and do the old "oops, I forgot my wallet" trick and get a free lunch. Hopefully, you'll get paid before he asks you out again. Further lunches will have to be paid for with money of sexual favors.

At least then, she'll be able to eat more than a burrito...

#56, and he might get a . . . Hot Pocket!

Brown bag is not only the least expensive, but also can be the most healthful; go for it!

I've done that so many times. I know it sucks OP, but maybe we both need to take advantage of brown bagging.
