Today, a customer approached me, smiling and asked what kind of cheese was in our cheddar cheese balls. Thinking he was joking, I laughed and said "swiss." He ordered, found they were indeed cheddar cheese, and reported me. FML

bandaidstations tells us more.

I didn't think it was swiss..I made a stupid joke that backfired. Cheddar cheese balls are the only fried cheese item we carry. There is a 6 foot menu board with the description right under the item. The customer is a regular who comes in and harasses us all the time. He says things like I will go to hell for having a tattoo while he buys lottery tickets out of the machine. Since he laughs the comments he makes off like he's joking, I figured I could joke with him a bit.

Apparently the name "cheddar cheese balls" is not descriptive enough....

Unfortunate OP. I'll be brutally honest, I don't think you should be dealing with customers if you're sarcastic like that. I'm the same. I can't help but give a sarcastic/joke response when someone asks something like that, whether I know they're joking or just stupid. That's why my job is behind the scenes.

What an akward response, I also have a lot of sarcasm up my sleeve but that doesn't mean I can't be respectful and kind to customers. OP already knew the customer, who sometimes makes 'rude jokes', so I understand her reaction. Also it is not because you assist people that you are their slave and that you should accept everything they say and do. A bit of sarcasm from time to time can set the rules for respectful behavior on both sides of the counter. But it is a risky game, the stupidity of people can be enormous, sadly.

It could certainly have multiple types of cheese and still be called a cheddar cheese ball, the customer may not be speaking his native language, or he may have some type of problem like dyslexia that makes it difficult to read - but those don't make him an idiot. You deserve this one.

probs should have told him straight after the joke that they are in fact cheddar. i get it though, i currently work at a fast food place (part time & staring university next month) and some customers are ******* annoying

You don't need to justify why you work in a fast food restaurant. My first job was in a Burger King and I learnt so much about customer service I'm proud of it.

YDI for underestimating the stupidity of (sone) customers.

Well, he just underlined his stupidity by reporting you for that. And if your manager reprimanded you, he is no wiser than the jerk.

stupid is as stupid does. sorry that happened, hope your supervisor understood.

Well at least the misunderstanding wasn't about the "balls".

You deserve it, never underestimate the stupid
