Today, a customer gave me the dirtiest look ever and muttered, "Goody two-shoes prick" after I asked if he'd like to donate a few cents to charity. FML

Sounds like someone needed coal in their stocking

Obviously not in the holiday spirit ... Love the name, should have used that in your answer to him.

but sir, these babies have no shoes at all

Some people don't like being told to donate money. Most prefer to do it of their own accord, rather then having a tin jingled in their face from a charity worker or unfortunately someone like yourself asking him to donate when he clearly didn't want to. Boundaries are important and not everyone can afford to donate at every given time and some people feel like they are being pressured to give what they don't have or more then they can spare.

That's understandable, but I'm pretty sure it was part of OP's job to ask.

and it wasn't clear that he didn't want to donate until after OP asked.

no one was telling the customer he had to donate. and if it's line my store, the question is asked on the pin pad and the transaction can't move forward until the consumer makes a choice. in less time than it took to be snotty about it, you could have just pressed no thanks and moved on.

That's still no reason to be a colossal dick about it, a simple question is not pressure. If you don't want to do something simply say no, no snotty responses needed to say no nor anyone to defend you for being a dick about it

Pretty sure this is a counter to an earlier post

Was it inside the store or were you one of those people who stands outside? I usually like their charities but I hate how they're always trying to guilt people into giving them money right before and after they pick up groceries.
