Today, a friend located my stolen dog. It was sold to a family that has an autistic child. I was told by the police that I could have my dog back, but they think I am a terrible person if I do. FML

I did take my dog back. I have had Riot for three years, so he is a big part of my family. I have also started boarding him during the day or leaving him with a family member/friend. I am moving in a few weeks so hopefully, this won't be an issue that pops up again. Chip your dogs. It is a lifesaver. While I understand where the police officer was coming from (he has an autistic child) you don't sell a family member. Dogs have always been family to me. The kind of awkward part was the mother started crying, asking to buy Riot from me. She said he was so well behaved and they needed something to help their kid. She then kind of demanded I let her son come over to my house to play with Riot when he wanted to. I guess so she could tell her son that Riot was still his, but that he was just living with someone else. I told her no and said I didn't want to have contact with her again. She got mad. I don't think I left looking like a saint, but I am glad to have my dog back.

So you should feel bad for having your stolen pet returned? Just because the kid's autistic? No, screw that. Take him back, he's yours.

They can get a new dog. You've had this dog. You should get it back. If one their dog was sold to someone else they would definitely get it back. Dogs are family.

I agree with your decision! No way in hell would I let someone keep my dogs or my cat! Love them so much! If they got stolen then the family should understand that the dog really does belong to you and they have no right to ask for anything. They can go get a new dog! Maybe even a registered therapy dog for their kid.

Who cares? Your dog, your say. I don't care if that kid IS autistic. It doesn't justify theft.

Good on you for not bending to the whims of society's double standards of what "nice" is. Especially in a touchy situation, like that.

Idea: take your dog back. Go but them a new dog

OP has no obligation to buy them a new dog. Frankly, the way the mother demanded OP let her son see the dog I wouldn't buy them a new dog if I was the OP.

I wouldn't buy the family a new dog even if they HAD been nice. Does it suck that they spent their money on something they won't be allowed to keep? Yes. Is that the responsibility of the person who was robbed? No. If they want to get the money they spent on the stolen dog back, that's the police's job. They need to find the thief, and if possible get the money back from him/her. After that, they can go ahead and actually invest some time to make sure they get the next dog from a reliable seller or breeder so this doesn't happen again.

So glad to hear that you have your dog back OP. I've owned my 14 year old cocker spaniel since she was 8 weeks old (although we picked her out at only 2!); if anyone so much as looked at her the wrong way I'd probably go all Punisher on them; regardless of any variables. I really hope there was nothing malicious on the parents' part, that it was just them not knowing the rule "If a deal looks too good to be true, it is" and they use due diligence next time when sourcing a puppy for their child. While you said you could understand the officer's perspective as they have an autistic child, I'd say his comments crossed a line and weren't professional and of course, you have no responsibility to tie yourself down with giving the access. While the kid may be upset for a while, they'll get over it.

Yikes. You're not in the wrong here for wanting your kid returned to you. It's just an all-around crappy situation for you and for the other family. Personally I'd remind the cop that the schmuck who stole your dog is the terrible person.

Who cares if they think you're a terrible person? It's your dog. As long as the police don't say they will arrest you or anything for taking it back, get your out back. It is very sad the child has autism, but the family can get other another dog.

Steal him back. Then at least they wont know where to steal him from.

You get your dog back. It's not your problem. Most any person with a handicap wants to be treated the same... So ****'em.
