Usually you get a ticket if it says do not jaywalk...unless I am lucky or something

Jaywalking is the act of crossing the road without being in the crosswalk, as well as doing so when the walker does not have right-away. In America, at least, we have crosswalks with signs that display whether it's the walker's turn to go, or the traffic's. But jaywalking would be to go during the traffic's turn, or to cross without using the crosswalk, that is to go in the middle of traffic. It is rarely charged, but is a misdemeanor. If a car were to hit the jaywalker, especially at night, the charges would mainly go to the jaywalker as he/she disrupted traffic and dangerously intercepted a moving vehicle. We have crosswalks in place, so pedestrians can get to another side of the road without worry of being hit. The people who do jaywalk are just too lazy to wait their turn. It's especially dangerous at night, where I had multiple encounters of almost hitting jaywalkers. If you're not in some big city, like Atlanta, Charleston, or New York City, then there's really no need to jaywalk.

Cops are way too uptight

Cops are nothing but revenue machines. Protect and serve my ass. Where was he when someone was getting robbed, raped, or murdered. Jaywalking tho? He's all over that. He's a hero!!

I would hate being a cop, knowing that I would get hated for just doing my job.

I bet op grew up in Boston. Jay walking is so normal here no one cares anymore.

He probably thought you were just asking for directions so you could run across without getting in trouble.
