Today, because it was our first Christmas as a couple, I was careful to get my girlfriend what I considered to be a very thoughtful gift. She opened it, took one look at it, made a face like I'd just kicked a puppy, and told me that in future it would be better if I just gave her money so she could buy her own presents. FML

Wow that is super harsh (but at least she's being honest), but still, FYL...

Did you get her a gym membership and/or diet supplements? Unless your present could be construed as a negative comment on how she looks, I can't imagine what would illicit such a response. (Unless it was a framed oil painting of your manhood.) We need more info and perhaps specifically ask her what she would like next time.

my gf told me that our first xmas as well. So the next xmas I bought her 12 printer cartridges for the wrong printer. We are now engaged!

I just can't stress how important communication in relationships is. My wife won't surprise me with anything unless I have an idea of what it is in fear of it being in poor taste. You might lose the "fun" of the mystery, but you get to cherish the intimacy of knowing and communicating with someone so deeply. It's a whole different world.

From now on, only give donations to charity in her name, let's see her bitch about that,

Maybe next time you could ask her friends to help you shop? My boyfriend consolidated with my mom, sister in law, and my two best friends while picking out my Christmas presents. Gift cards to her favorite places are really nice too.

You know my husband has given me some strike out gifts over our 33 1/2 years together, but he never knows it. You sound like a great guy and you deserve better. There is someone out there who won't care if you DO have bad taste in gifts. She will love you for you, and would never be so tacky as to tell you she'd rather have money than a gift from your heart.

At least you tried, I wish my man would give me anything other than money or fancy jewelry. I literally have a drawer full of jewels that i don't wear, and can't due to work. Every once and a while (on a weekend) I'll get one out and wear it for a day, but I feel super silly doing so. Just once I would love a heartfelt note, or a small keychain from a movie I love or something. He's the perfect man, but just goes for the default present. Must buy woman sparkly rock. Woman love sparkly rock....

Her next gift should be a nice fat dump job. She's obviously not the girl you're looking for.
