Today, I bought my very first college textbook. I received a stack of hole-punched papers. My $195 "book" isn’t even bound together. FML

Yep. welcome to college. Take some advice... never buy new if you can help it. Google "buy used textbooks." You can save 50% or more on a lot of books by not buying new from the bookstore.

One of my classes had that too. It was the only one I bought new because I didn't trust the used version not to be missing pages

It’s just a loose leaf book. I would assume it would be specified when you ordered as either soft cover, hard cover, or loose leaf. It’s really not that uncommon. You just buy a $2 binder and you’ll be all set!

Try to find an older student willing to sell their books for cheaper. Also, Amazon sometimes has much cheaper second hand books.

Yeah? That’s called loose leaf? It’s a thing..?

Always check amazon, just put the ISBN number in the search bar and most will be there. Amazon rental is great. There was one book I had to get last semester that would’ve been $160 to rent because the school store only had it new ($60 to rent used if I remember correctly) and amazon had it to rent for $25. The book came in a few days and the return date was about 2 weeks after the semester ended. My plan was to ship to back before I left the dorm but in the chaos of finals and packing it was easier to send it back once I got home. When you’re ready to return it you just go on amazon and they’ll give you a packing slip to use. You just need to get a box or a packing envelope, tape the packing slip on, and bring it to the post office.

done this before and somehow my rentals were lost between the post office and Amazon. About $300 dollars and a couple months later, the books found their way to Amazon. Still out the money though..

Higher education has turned into nothing more than a cash grab. I wish I could tell you this was unusual, but it's not. Just wait until you get a professor that makes you buy the book they wrote and see how violated you feel...
