Today, I called my mom for the first time in a few weeks, just to chat because I miss her. When she picked up, the first thing she said was, "Why are you calling? What's wrong? Do you have swine flu??" When I told her that I didn't, and I just wanted to chat, she hung up. FML

Today, I called my mom from Australia. I have been abroad for two months and hadn't talked to her in a long time. A few minutes into the conversation my moms stops me and says this call must cost a fortune and hangs up on me. A few bucks in more important to her then me. FML

Today, I texted my mom and had to explain to her that calling me repeatedly at 2 a.m. because you're bored and want to talk is not really a good idea. Seriously, nothing happened, she just wanted to chat because she had nothing else to do. Her response to my message? She started calling me again. FML

Your mom was probably being facetious to make the point that you should call her more often. And this swine flu shit is NOT all that serious. There are less than 500 confirmed cases out of 6 billion people in the world, and even fewer have died of it. More people die from cancer, AIDS and car accidents EVERY SINGLE DAY. Just wash your damn hands like they taught you in preschool and you'll be fine.

you people who are complaining about the swine flu being stupid have no idea how ridiculous it actually is... my school is closed for 2 weeks because like 2 people had it. that sucks about your mom though.. i'm sorry :/

#51: Maybe, just maybe, the school knows how paranoid people are getting over this and are afraid this paranoia could get out of hand and they could get in trouble (imagine a third kid gets the flu, and the parents think this flu is worse than a normal flu so they sue the school for not closing). Or maybe this flu IS in fact a lot more dangerous than a regular flu. I don't know, but my point is the fact that a school closes is not good evidence. Otherwise, I think OP's mom may have been upset because she didn't get calls more often. "A few weeks" sounds like almost a month. Mother is family, not talking to her for so long seems quite insensitive to me (but maybe OP want to call earlier but really could not do it). I can't just blame the mother without more information.

Aww my dad is like that sometimes, just hangs up without even saying goodbye or letting me finish my sentence. But I hope you called her up again and told her that what she did was rather insensitive, swine flu or not.
