Today, I confiscated a 1st grader's cell phone. It was better than anything I could come close to affording. FML

I work in a low-income school. Very rarely do we have students who have OLD (think Nokia brick) cellphones that are deactivated so that they can call the police if necessary. These students are usually our 4th & 5th graders who may be involved with activities after school. Occasionally we will have a student with one of those "cellphones" that can only be used to contact parents & police. Otherwise, this was a rarity.

First graders have cell phones nowadays? Yeesh.

Wow, when I was in first grade I had legos, not a smartphone. It's crazy how much those things control our lives now.

I have an iPhone I'm 11. You obviously haven't met this generations kids.

First off, you're too young to be on this site, second, no one cares what you have and stating it like that just makes everyone believe how spoiled kids are these days.

On the up side, texting and reading all the time has resulted in an 11 year old having better language skills than the college graduate OP.

First of all, this is what is wrong with the younger kids. They think that they are the best because they have smartphones at that age and we didn't. You guys need to get off your phone (and this app) and go play outside or do something. Second of all, I'm 18 and I grew up with out a phone. I don't see why you need a smart phone at that age. A basic phone at the age is fine. Maybe if you guys weren't so spoiled the younger generation wouldn't be all about technology and would use their brain more.

#58 Who is that comment addressed to? #38 or the first grader who I seriously doubt is on FML? Secondly, get off your soap box. The fact that you grew up without a phone is great but that doesn't make you better than anyone who did. And considering that we live in an increasingly technological world there's nothing wrong with kids using technology, especially since schools are starting to encourage their use for educational purposes. Thirdly, the "this generation" bashing has got to stop. You're 18, you have no clue what previous generations were really like.

I got my first cell phone when I was in 4th grade :/

got my phone in 3rd grade and my sister in 1st, we only had them since we were home along a few hours after school but they got taken away when we didn't need them, but I'm sure nowadays a smartphone is completely unnecessary for them, we aren't getting one for my littlest sister who is in 2nd grade now

Wow I had my first phone when I was about 16 years old and it wasn't even a smartphone

Don't know what everyone is shocked about. I'm 21 and got my first cell phone in 3rd grade. That said I wouldn't trust a first grader with an iphone. Guaranteed that thing will be lost or broke quick

When I was in first grade, I didn't even know what a cell phone was let alone have one. That just shows how bad today's society is OP.

Ah yes, advances in technology totally means society had gone down the shitter. Good logic there.

"It was better than anything I could come close to affording one." With that mastery of grammar, I can see why you're teaching first grade.

I was playing with legos and watching T.V in first grade. We had nothing close to a phone and from what I read,it was probably an IPhone.

Not all smart phones are as expensive as that kid's is. There are also these things call computers. If you don't buy an apple you can find some that are cheaper then phones.

I had a crappy little flipphone for a few months and I could go to most websites on that. I checked my Facebook and other things on it. To assume FML would work on that really isn't that far of a stretch.
