ElementaryEdGuy tells us more.
I work in a low-income school. Very rarely do we have students who have OLD (think Nokia brick) cellphones that are deactivated so that they can call the police if necessary. These students are usually our 4th & 5th graders who may be involved with activities after school. Occasionally we will have a student with one of those "cellphones" that can only be used to contact parents & police. Otherwise, this was a rarity.

When I was in first grade I had a cell phone it was called a candy cell. WHAT RHE **** IS WRONG WITH SOCIETY!?!?
Get over it. Times are changing.
Get over it. You chose to have a low paying job.
Lol, no bitterness from me. :)
I got my first cell phone in sixth grade, and it was just for weekends so I could contact my mom if I needed to. Personally, I don't think kids these days need a smartphone/tablet/iPad/personal computer. A family computer for school assignments should be fine. The internet is an amazing thing, and technology is incredible, but I think people are loosing touch with reality by spending too much time on the web.
It pisses me off that little kids these days have cell phones. They do NOT need a fancy phone, iPod/iPad, their own laptop, etc. This is why kids are stupidly spoiled these days and another reason they get away with everything - their parents know no boundaries or limits.
I just don't understand parents now and days. Why give basically a toddler a phone?
Why would a parent give their 1st grader a cell phone? Who are they gunna call/text ? They barely know how to spell.
When I have kids of my own, I'm not even going to let them have phones until they are in high school!
I got my first phone when I was 11 because when I started middle school I had to walk to and from the bus stop.. And it was a really cheap and really ugly phone lol. I'm 20 now and my brother for his 13th birthday got an iPhone 5c and I was so pissed because it took me 5 years to actually get a decent phone..

First graders have cell phones nowadays? Yeesh.
Wow, when I was in first grade I had legos, not a smartphone. It's crazy how much those things control our lives now.
