Today, I decided I need help, so I confessed to my mother that I'm bulimic. After she looked it up online she started screaming at me for "Wasting food that I'm not paying for." FML

OP, I'm sorry 90% of the people in this thread are being assholes. I'm a recovering bulimic myself and I know how hard it can be. If your mom doesn't understand, please seek therapy so you have someone to listen to you and help you through these difficult times. And to everyone giving her crap for "wasting food middle Eastern kids could eat," it's not as though she's physically stealing food from underprivileged. Her not throwing up her pizza isn't going to buy one for a refugee camp. If you're so concerned about starvation, donate food or money or time to charities helping them instead of sitting around mocking someone on the internet. You might think you're Mother Theresa, but bitching on FML isn't putting food on anybody's plate.

Lame. That sucks that your mother did not react how you needed her to. I hope she comes to be more supportive. I wish you the best in your recovery.

Oh wow, I can't believe your mother would do something like that. Shows that she doesn't care about your health. FYL and hers.

that's horrible. obviously, your mom doesn't get the gravity of the situation. OP, hang in there and don't listen to the ppl being unfair to you

How come when it comes to obesity, most people are like "Put down the fork, it's not that hard to stop eating!" but then if it's anorexia/bulimia they'll say "OMG you don't understand! Its a mental illness!"? I never understood that. Anorexics/bulimics don't eat for some emotional reason, whereas for some obese people, its the opposite reaction.

I would agree with you if there are people who do that. I believe that both anorexia and bulimia are mental disorders and many people don't understand them. Just take a look at this FML. There are so many reasons for eating and not eating. People who are obese are probably not mentally healthy either. There are mental disorders for them too-- compulsive overeating. It is a real disorder. Similar to bulimia but without the compensating behaviors (vomiting, etc.).

Actually, there have been psychologists who want to put obesity in the next edition of the DSM (a book that sets down the criteria for diagnosing mental disorders) because the relationship that many obese people have with food is highly similar to the relationship that people who abuse substances have with those substances. Even people who don't want to include it still acknowledge that there is a strong psychological component to obesity, and that dealing with it isn't as simple as just sticking to a diet and exercise routine. There's also some cool research going on about the addictive properties of sugar. For example, people who go on Atkins diets will experience "withdrawal," and scientists at Princeton have found that rats addicted to cocaine will choose sugar over cocaine. Interesting, no? Edit: PS- What ClaireXX is talking about is called "binge eating disorder" and is like bulimia, but without purging. It is different from obesity.

yes! Haha I did know the name. It just slipped my mind. Binge Eating Disorder is in the DSM, I believe?

It is not currently officially recognized as a disorder in the DSM, as most of the research on it is fairly new; however, there are diagnostic criteria in the appendix of the DSM-IV-TR, and I imagine it will be included as a recognized disorder in the DSM-V.

Both you and your mom need to seek help.

OP, don't listen to all the ignorant idiots who say that it's not that hard to stop. I know what it's like. It's hard admitting that you need help, so it's good that you did. Best of luck for a relatively easy recovery.

I highly doubt her mother was going to give her money for charity and if she's screaming at her for wasting money in the first place, so that's a void and really stupid argument. BTW, the electricity that you're using to power your computer and troll FML could be used to power two homes in Africa! So why don't you just stop using your computer unless it's for humanitarian work! Stupid argument, right? Here's the thing with mental disorders. People can't SEE them, therefore they think the person is faking it and shit, and just needs to "get over it". Listen douchenozzles. It doesn't WORK like that. People who had mental disorders in the 1600's till about recently were thrown into institutions and were given electroshock treatments and were test subjects to other diseases. And people accepted it, just like people are accepting the retarded comments to just "get over it" on this thread. Like it's really that simple. If it was really that simple, do you think the schizophrenic would want to keep hearing voices? The the depressed would want to stay unhappy? And if she could really get over it, do you think she'd ever even TELL her mom in the first place if she could handle it herself? And for the people saying anorexia and bulimia are not mental disorders, I want to see your PhD's in Psychology. C'mon, as they always say: 'pics or it didn't happen'. Just that in this case, it's "pics, otherwise STFU." /endrant

It's so hard to stop, i'm glad you admitted it, you've got bigger balls than me. :/ Everybody is saying "YDI" As if you can help eating dissorders...? It's a mental thing?

#105: I'm surprised that people like you are so ridiculously stupid, yet you know how to work a computer? That's just mind-boggling.
