I seriously doubt someone switched the boxes. Bright orange hair is surprisingly common when trying to do your hair at home yourself. You likely just didn't do it right ... wrong timing, wrong product, wrong combination of previous dye types, any number of things.

Find an ash brown of the desired level and that should result in close to what you want. I'm a colorist.
That happened to me, too. Only instead of dying my hair red-brown it turned out splotchy brown-blonde. I wante to shave my head...
Also, wash your hair with a chealating shampoo first to strip out the orange. The best advice is to simply go to a good color salon and have them fix it.
